Back-to-School Budgeting: A Realistic Family Checklist
Uniforms, supplies, tech, trips, and the small fees that arrive all term. Here is how to fund them without a scramble.

The costs, in the order they hit
- Uniform and shoes — the biggest single hit, and the one that is outgrown fastest.
- Supplies and stationery — small individually, sizeable in total.
- Technology — devices, chargers, cases, and the software fee nobody mentions.
- Transport — bus passes, extra fuel, parking.
- Term-time extras — trips, clubs, photos, fundraisers, and dress-up days.
Fund it as a sinking fund
Take last year's total, add a bit, divide by twelve. School costs are annual, not sudden — which makes them ideal for monthly funding.
Ways to lower the total
- Buy uniform a size up and second-hand where the school allows it.
- Inventory what you already own before shopping; most homes already have half the stationery list.
- Split bulk supplies with another family.
- Set a per-child limit and let older kids make trade-offs within it — a genuinely useful lesson.
Do not forget the term-time drip
Small fees across the year often exceed the August shop. Give them their own envelope and stop being surprised by them.
