Budgeting as a Couple: How to Run a Monthly Money Date
A repeatable 30-minute agenda for reviewing money together without it turning into an argument.

Why a scheduled conversation beats a spontaneous one
Money arguments rarely start over money. They start over surprise. A recurring money date replaces surprise with routine: same time, same agenda, no ambushes.
The 30-minute agenda
Minutes 0–5: wins. Name one thing that went well. A goal hit, a bill lowered, a week under target.
Minutes 5–15: last month. Which envelopes ran dry? Which were overfunded? No blame — just adjust the numbers.
Minutes 15–25: next month. Known irregular costs, birthdays, trips, school fees. Fund them now.
Minutes 25–30: one decision. Pick a single change to try. One is achievable; five is a resolution list.
Ground rules worth agreeing on
- Each partner gets personal spending money that needs no justification.
- Set a "check first" threshold — any purchase above it gets a text before it happens.
- The budget is the referee. Disagree with the plan, not with each other.
If one of you is not interested
Ask for twenty minutes a month, not co-management. Shared visibility with one driver still beats a secret spreadsheet.
