Holiday Budget Planning: Start in July, Not December

A month-by-month plan for gifts, travel, and food so January arrives without a credit card hangover.

The December problem

Holiday spending is predictable in timing and unpredictable only in amount — which is exactly the kind of cost a budget can absorb, if you start early enough.

Set a total before a list

Decide what the entire season is worth to you: gifts, travel, food, decorations, events. One number. Then divide the months remaining and fund it monthly.

Break the total into buckets

  • Gifts (per person, written down)
  • Travel and fuel
  • Food and hosting
  • Events, outfits, and school activities
  • Postage and wrapping — the bucket everyone forgets

Keep the list honest

Write every name and a per-person amount before you shop. The overspend almost always comes from the people who were not on the list, not from going over on the people who were.

In January

Total what you actually spent per bucket and set next year's monthly amount from that number. Two cycles of this and holiday spending becomes an ordinary line item.
