Automatic Spending Tracking: What to Automate and What to Review

Bank sync does the typing. You still make the decisions. Here is how to split the work.

Automate the boring part

Manual entry is where budgets die. Connecting your accounts means transactions arrive on their own, with merchant, amount, and date already filled in. That removes the daily chore without removing your oversight.

Let categorisation learn

Good categorisation is mostly pattern matching: this merchant, that category. High-confidence matches can be applied automatically; anything ambiguous belongs in a short review queue rather than being silently guessed.

Review, do not re-enter

A weekly review of the uncertain items takes a few minutes and gets faster every week as merchant rules build up. Confirm once and the same merchant is handled correctly forever.

Still worth doing by hand

  • Cash spending, which no sync can see.
  • Splitting a single shop across categories (groceries and household).
  • Reimbursables you expect to get back.

Watch for the two classic errors

Duplicates when a pending charge posts again, and transfers counted as spending when you move money between your own accounts. Both inflate your spending and quietly ruin the numbers you are budgeting from.
